Sickness Care Versus Wellness Self-Care

lady walkingIt’s not surprising to find out that the United States makes up 5% of the world’s population yet they consume over 50 percent of the world’s pharmaceutical drugs.

Drugs have side effects…some of them very serious and life threatening. A statistic that is surprising and beyond belief is that medical errors rank as the third cause of death in the US. What does that mean? It means if you are younger than 45, a resident of the US, your number one risk of dying is an encounter with the medical system.

While it is desirable to eliminate symptoms when they appear, (we do try and make people comfortable) in most cases it is way more important to treat the cause. We are starting to understand that health is more than simply the absence of disease. It is about having a positive proactive attitude towards one’s own health.

It is about prevention…not about waiting until disease strikes you down and steals your body away.

It is about wellness care rather than sickness care. Wellness care focuses on finding and eliminating the cause of disease, not just treating the disease symptoms alone.

Sickness care: reactively treats the symptoms of disease after they occur.

Wellness care: proactively prevents poor healthy and disease and slow the aging process.

Drugs are dished out too easily for all sorts of conditions. Antibiotics for infection, anti-inflammatory drugs for pain, blood thinning drugs for heart disease, Ritalin for out of control children, drugs to lower cholesterol and so on. The cause is totally ignored while we continue to treat symptoms over and over.

Good health and wellness are something you seek out and practice in your everyday lifestyle to reduce the risk of sickness and disease and slow the aging process. Sickness is something that happens to you.

The focus should be staying well. However, if you are having health issues, proactive wellness care focuses on finding and eliminating the cause of your problems rather than just treating the symptoms as is usually done in our modern day “sickness treatment” system.

How do we achieve this type of healthy wellness? Living this type of lifestyle has requirements that must be met if you wish to stay at this level of health. Choosing healthy foods with a minimum of refined and processed non-nutrient foods, strength building and maintaining exercise is all needed.

And, not surprisingly, we need to become less doctor and drug dependent and avoid running off to the doctors with every sniffle, ache or pain.

You are the only one who can give the gift of health to your body. Only you can give yourself a strong, healthy, disease resistant body. We must be responsible to ourselves.

We must take responsibility for our own health and wellness. This means moving from a “sickness/curative” mindset to a “wellness/preventative” view of our life if we ever expect to live a high quality life with vigor.

Keeping wellness and health is way more important than wealth of any sort. You have wealth unlimited but without a healthy body what good is it?
